Jimmy’s Diary: Chasing Giant Catfish with Delkim V2s and SmartLites

It has been a busy month on the fishing front. I have been hunting some very big fish along with my usual carp adventures. The fish in question, the Wels Catfish. For some reason, I had a bit of an itch to scratch; I wanted to break my long-standing personal best catfish, which was around the 50lb mark. I was also wanting to document it all for my YouTube channel, Jimmy’s Diary.

The Catfish Hunt Begins at Roedeer Lake

My first port of call was a little, deep pit known as Roedeer Lake in Cambridge. I was rigged up with very large halibut pellet hook baits and luncheon meat. These were mounted on large size 4 Wide Gape X hooks and boated to some clear spots.

After losing a fish early to a hook pull, I made up for it the second night, when a warbling v2 let out a one toner and I landed a small kitten of around 20lb.

That was it for that session, so I planned another trip, this time to the historic Waveney Valley Lakes in Suffolk. The lake itself is stunning, reed-lined, and holds some giants.

I was there for 48 hours, and after seeing some huge plumes of bubbles, that were telltale signs of catfish, I soon got some rods onto them.

Catfish can be very finicky feeders so I had to set my indication properly. I was using my v2’s and SmartLites, with the Response set ultra sensitive and also the beep speed on setting 4. I was also using braided main lines.

A 67lb Catfish and a New Personal Best!

After dropping a few rigs into the area, I immediately started to receive liners, it was clear that cats were in the vicinity.

A few hours passed and the left hand rod absolutely melted. The fight was absolutely incredible as it stripped yards and yards of braid from a tight clutch.

I started to make headway before shuffling a monstrous cat into the net. She went 67lb!!!! A new PB and a very happy angler.

Back to My Carp Fishing Adventures

I’d completed my short mission and so it was time to turn my attention back to the carp.

I went back to the lovely overgrown pond I’ve been fishing in Peterborough and it didn’t take long to get in on the action with a couple of incredible old fish.

I will be searching once again this week and hope for much of the same!

Why Delkim D-Loks Are an Essential Part of My Setup

This month I wanted to focus on the D-Loks. They’re an unsung hero in my armoury.

Due to the way I fish, many different venues, with varying bankside conditions, sometimes I need buzz bars, other days a pod, and others long single banksticks.

Now unless you’ve got an endless supply of bite alarms and back rests, it can be aggro to keep swapping buzzers over.

That’s why I use the D-Loks. They allow you to chop and change, quickly and ultra securely, meaning no more wasted time on the bank.

Take a look at them, you will be impressed!
